Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny City
Set in extensive parklands, this 13th century castle was once the home of the Butlers, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde. The castle has been magnificently restored and guided tours are available all year round.

Shankhill Castle

Paulstown, Kilkenny.
Shankhill Castle started as a Queen Anne house set in a formal landscape. In the 19th century it was enlarged and castellated. Since 1991 Shankhill castle is the home and studio to the artist Elizabeth Cope, whose paintings are on display. Her work can be seen at www.elizabethcope.com

Burnchurch Castle

6km from Kilkenny
A well preserved Norman Tower of the 14th century, with a Round gate tower. Very little is known about this castle, it is said to have been built and owned by the Fitzgeralds of the house of Desmond.

The Seven Castles of Kells

The monastery of Kells dates from 1193AD. The seven towers are in various stages of preservation, but must have been spartan in their standard of comfort for their inhabitants. It is an ideal place to bring children for a day outing. Apart from what they would learn in history they would certainly enjoy the day playing at knights in armour up and down the steps and exploring the castles. (Pictured left).

Jerpoint Abbey

Thomastown, 24km
This outstanding Cisterian Abbey was founded in the 12th century. The church, with it’s Irish Romanesque details, dates from this period, though the tower, east window and the beautifully sculptured cloister arcade date from around 1400.

Rothe House

Parliament Street, Kilkenny.
It is here that the famous rosary once given to Ballybur Castle by Cardinal Rinuncinni is kept. Rothe house is a 16th century Tudor town house. Rothe House Museum features a fine period costume display and frequent exhibitions.

Inistioge

From Thomastown take the New Ross - Inistioge road, and after about 10km you arrive in the beautiful village of Inistioge. Take a stroll through the village, or along the river Nore and visit Woodstock estate (pictured right). Tree lovers, romantics and also children will have an unforgettable visit to this enchanting place, which is wonderful for picnics.

Dunmore Cave

Ballyfoyle, 20km.
This is one of Ireland's more interesting limestone caves. First mentioned in the 9th century Irish Triads, it was reported to be the site of a viking massacre in 928AD. Coins found in the cave date from 897 to 926.
